Our closing story for Blak History Month: Amethea Mamarika.

Amethea Mamarika is one of the leading voices on Groote Eylandt, combining a passion for community, language and culture with a remarkable career in broadcasting.

A proud member of the Mamarika Clan—one of the 14 major clan groups of Groote Eylandt—Amethea joined Groote Broadcasting's Anindilyakwa Radio in 2019. Her natural leadership, commitment to community and exceptional broadcasting skills quickly saw her rise through the ranks, and in April 2021 she was appointed Station Lead at Umbakumba Radio.

As a broadcaster, Amethea has become a trusted voice across the Groote Archipelago. Every day she connects with listeners, delivering everything from community news and local announcements to vital emergency information. Whether reminding residents to put their bins out, preparing families for approaching cyclones or sharing critical public health advice, her calm, familiar voice has become an essential part of daily life.

During the pandemic, Amethea played a pivotal role in keeping her community informed and safe. Broadcasting in both Anindilyakwa and English, she helped translate complex health information into clear, culturally relevant messages that reached people across the island. Her tireless work, alongside the efforts of many local organisations, contributed to Groote Eylandt's successful response to the pandemic and demonstrated the vital role community radio plays during times of crisis.

In recognition of her dedication, Amethea received the 2021 Community Contribution and Service to Radio Award in Umbakumba. She has also emerged as a respected young leader beyond broadcasting, serving on the Anindilyakwa Land Council Board and later joining the Aminjarrinja Directorate, where she continues to advocate for her people and community.

Away from the radio studio, Amethea is a sought-after emcee at community events and is passionate about inspiring the next generation. She regularly welcomes local school students into the station, teaching broadcasting skills and encouraging young people to see media as both a creative outlet and a future career.

Family and Country remain at the heart of everything she does. Amethea enjoys hunting, fishing, collecting turtle eggs and sugarbag, and spending time on Country with family. Music, dance and travel are also important parts of her life, reflecting the strong cultural connections she brings to every aspect of her work.

Amethea believes education empowers young people to confidently walk in both worlds—strong in culture while embracing new opportunities. Her hope is that future generations will become leaders on their own Country, carrying forward the strength, knowledge and voices of their people.

"One people. One voice." is more than a motto—it is the philosophy that continues to guide Amethea's work, leadership and service to community.
