Closing Reflections – Blak History Month.

As Blak History Month comes to a close, we simply want to say thank you.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to read, share, comment and engage with these stories. Your encouragement, curiosity and generosity reminded us that there is a genuine appetite to learn more about the people, cultures and histories that have shaped this country for tens of thousands of years.

Over the past month we've celebrated artists, musicians, filmmakers, entrepreneurs, activists, language keepers, community leaders and everyday people whose achievements deserve to be better known. Many of these stories have rarely found a place in the mainstream conversation, yet they are an essential part of Australia's story.

Not every response was positive. Alongside the many thoughtful conversations were comments that were dismissive, derogatory and, at times, openly racist. While disappointing, they also remind us why initiatives like Blak History Month continue to matter. Ignorance is challenged through knowledge. Understanding begins with listening. Respect grows when we take the time to learn about one another.

We haven't shared these stories to divide people. We've shared them because history is richer when it's more complete. Every story told adds another thread to the fabric of our shared national identity.

If even one person discovered an inspiring leader they had never heard of, learned a new word in an Aboriginal language, listened to an Indigenous artist for the first time, or saw Australia through a different lens, then this month has been worthwhile.

The conversation doesn't end here. Blak history isn't confined to one month of the year—it lives every day, in communities across the country, in language, music, art, culture, innovation and the enduring connection to Country.

Let's keep listening. Let's keep learning. Let's keep telling the stories that deserve to be heard.
