First Nations community radio is seen as crucial for the promotion of Indigenous culture and languages, and the communication needs of remote communities.
Groote Broadcasting operates from cultural centres in the two main communities.
Angurugu Radio 102.9fm and Radio Umbakumba 106.3fm provide 24 hour listening with programs that feature local and world news, events, culture and music.
Radio under the Anindilyakwa Land Council was established in late 2017. Top End Aboriginal Bush Broadcast Association (TEABBA) are the licensee, auspicing Groote Broadcasting, Anindilyakwa Radio.
On July 1st, 2024, radio became an independent entity from the ALC and was registered as its own corporation; Groote Broadcasting Anindilyakwa Radio Aboriginal Corporation (GBARAC). Seven directors were appointed representing community across the entire Groote Archipelago. GBARAC would like to thank the ALC and acknowledge its ongoing funding generously received from ALC since 2017.
It stands now accountable to its own guiding principles and the objectives of community broadcasting and continues to operate under the Australian Communications Media Authority (ACMA). GBARAC also operates under an MOU agreement with TEABBA, to ‘switch over’ after daily program service, to meet NIAA funding agreements allowing sponsorship, played via ad spots’ on TEABBA radio.
