On this day in 1967, over 90% of Australians voted YES in a landmark referendum to amend the Constitution, finally recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as part of the population and allowing the federal government to make laws for them.
It was a powerful moment of unity—a step toward justice after decades of exclusion. But while the vote changed the law, it didn’t erase inequality.
The 1967 Referendum remains a symbol of what’s possible when a nation listens to its conscience—but it also reminds us how far we still have to go on the journey toward true equity, recognition, and voice.
