International Day of Zero Waste — and this one will blow your mind...
Picture this. The world produces MORE than enough food to feed every single person on the planet. Every man, woman, and child. Sorted, right?
Wrong.
In 2022 alone, the world wasted over 1 BILLION tonnes of food. That's roughly one in every five meals just... gone.
And here's the thing — every single day, households around the world are throwing away the equivalent of at least one billion meals. Food that could have fed every hungry person on Earth — 1.3 meals a day each.
While all that food is being chucked out, 783 million people are going to bed hungry tonight.
First Nations communities have always understood what it means to respect food — when every part of an animal is used, when Country provides and that gift is honoured. That deep relationship with food and land is something the rest of the world is only just starting to wake up to.
And it's not just about hunger — all that wasted food is pumping out 8–10% of global greenhouse gases. That's nearly five times more than the entire aviation industry. Country is feeling that.
So, today is International Day of Zero Waste. It's a good day for people to think about what's sitting in the fridge, what can be used up, and what Elders have always known — you don't waste what the land gives you.
