Think about that for a second. In an age of Spotify, podcasts, streaming, and an infinite scroll of content in everyone's pocket, more than 5.39 million Australians still tune in to community radio every single week.

Not because they have to. Because they want to.

There are more than 500 community-owned and operated radio stations across this country, kept alive by around 18,000 volunteers who show up for the love of it. And the reason people keep coming back is the one thing all the algorithms in the world can't replicate.

Connection.

A playlist doesn't know your name. A podcast can't read out a message for your aunty's birthday. An algorithm has never once mentioned that the barra are biting, that there's a funeral this week, or that the road's cut off after the rain. Community radio does all of that because the person behind the microphone is one of you. Living where you live. Knowing what you know.

As one researcher put it recently , you can ring up a community station and be straight through to the person on air. Try doing that with a streaming app. That closeness is the whole point.

And here's what makes it hit even harder for us. First Nations community radio is punching well above its weight. Indigenous stations make up a third of the country's most music-intensive stations — and 60% of First Nations listeners say the music they hear on community radio directly enriches their cultural experience. That's not just entertainment. That's culture, language and identity, going out over the airwaves and into homes and cars right across the country.

In remote Australia, radio isn't a nice-to-have. It's a lifeline. When the internet drops out, when you're hundreds of kilometres from the nearest town, when the phone signal fades on the highway — the radio's still there. Still talking. Still playing the songs. Still keeping the whole community connected as one.

The internet gave us everything, everywhere, all at once. And somehow, a local voice on the radio still means more than all of it.

So this Monday morning, as you tune in ...thank you. You're not just a listener. You're the reason we exist.
