After two decades without a new album of original material, Christine Anu returned with something far more meaningful than a comeback record.

Waku – Minaral A Minalay is a beautiful journey into family, Country, language and memory, drawing heavily on songs passed down from Anu’s grandfather, Saibai Island songman Nadi Anu.

Working with longtime collaborator David Bridie, Anu blends traditional Torres Strait Islander music with contemporary production, creating something that feels both ancient and completely at home in the present.

And that voice? Still unmistakable. Warm, soulful and quietly powerful.

There’s a real sense of family running through the album too, with Anu’s daughter Zipporah involved in the project, creating a musical thread that stretches across generations.

More than an album, Waku feels like cultural memory set to music — stories carried forward through song, language and love.

Beautiful, intimate and deeply connected to place, it’s a powerful reminder that sometimes the best way forward is to listen to the voices of those who came before.
